Wickham Point Immigration Detention Centre
Wickham Point IDC is now open with the first compound of 500 people almost at capacity. ( There are three compounds in total with a capacity of 1500 people.)
WIckham Point is 35 km from Palmerston , with a severe biting insect problem. ( see the attached environmental assessment done on mosquitos at Wickham Point and Blaydin Point nearby) . DIAC's solution to this is to provide insect repellent....
"SOME of the Territory's richest men are using Crown Land leased for a song six years ago to rent it back to the Commonwealth as part of a $200 million detention centre deal. And all on a mozzie-infested, 94ha site at Wickham Point that cost $510,000 as a Crown lease in perpetuity back in 2005 - with no yearly rent. The men at the centre of the deal are millionaires Nick Paspaley and developer John "Foxy" Robinson - with Paspaley Group property manager Mark Jagla.'
