NT Women's Human Rights Award Night - March 9th
The International Women's Day (IWD) Awards night was held at Charles Darwin University on Friday 9th March 2012
Awards were presented to the following outstanding women who have made significant contributions to the advancement of Human Rights.
Law & Policy Award
Recipient: Justine Davis
Justine Davis has contributed an enormous amount to Law and Policy in Human Rights in the asylum seeker area which has been a benefit to all sectors of society. Justine has a Bachelor of laws and a Masters in Peace Studies that she has been utilising to fight for the human rights of asylum seekers.
Commend: Caitlin Perry (she is unable to attend but her rep Saskia Strange will receive the cert & token on her behalf)
Right to Education
Recipient: Sister Theresa Ward (she is unable to attend as she is busy attending to a teaching commitment at Our Lady of Sacret Heart Thamarrurr Catholic School, Wadeye, Port Keats)
Commend : Margaret Anstess
Right to Culture
Recipient: Aunty Kathleen Mills
women to commend: 1. Payi Linda Ford, 2. Brenda Logan
Right to Health
Recipient: Michele Castagna OAM – she is in Alice and is unable to attend but has requested Jenny Upton from National Disability Service to accept the award on her behalf.
Commend: Le Smith
Youth Award
Recipient: Jane Alia Clement
Commend: Meredith Davies
Rural women Award
Recipient: Linda LT Turner from Tenant Creek (Linda is unable to attend but has requested the NT Council to accept the award on her behalf)
The Night featured : cultural performances
Key note speaker : Samah Hadid - Acclaimed human rights advocate and 2010 Australian Youth representative to the United Nations.
